Ekukhanyeni Islamic Centre

Brief Background

"Iqadi" is named after the chief of the Iqadi, situated under the uMzinyathi area within the Ingonyama Trust. It is a rural area where many residents still live below the poverty line, lacking access to basic necessities such as water, food, and electricity. The majority of the population relies on government grants for sustenance.

Help Our World (H.O.W), established in 2012, is led by Brother Omar Jameel Mkata, formerly Senzo James Mkata, who embraced Islam in 2009 with guidance from Maulana Rafiq Mohammed and Brother Musa Phiri. Brother Omar's journey includes obtaining a diploma in child psychology from Unisa after matriculating in 2000.

In 2013, he joined Munazzamat, a Sudanese organization, and in 2014, a portion of land was allocated to H.O.W by Brother Mustaffa Elawad. This land was used to construct an Islamic centre benefiting the Ekukhanyeni community. SADN joined in 2016 to assist with funding from a Dubai charity, facilitating the construction of the Masjid and enabling services such as daily prayers and Madressa classes for children. Funding for these activities was provided by Munazzamat Al-Da’wa Al-Islamiyya until 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted operations.

ISLAMIC DEVELOPMENT

In 2020, the centre faced setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, including vandalism and the absence of an Imam. These challenges, compounded by difficulties in securing funding, posed significant obstacles. Musjid Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz in Ekukhanyeni, Iqadi Village was once left in a dilapidated state, with cows grazing inside, rendering it unsuitable for use However, in September 2023, HUDA SA intervened, sourcing funds from donors and well-wishers to renovate both the Masjid and the Imam's house. Additionally, funds were secured for welfare grants for the Imam and muazzin. With these improvements, it is anticipated that activities at the centre will resume, possibly by the beginning of May 2024, by the grace of Allah.

CONCLUSION: BR OMAR JAMEEL MKATA AMEER OF EKUKHANYENI ISLAMIC CENTRE

The Islamic Centre in the village serves as the sole hub for Islamic presence. When the centre was damaged and unable to function, Muslims lacked a place for spiritual upliftment. Alhamdulillah, HUDA SA's intervention has restored the Masjid to its former glory, with activities buzzing and support extended to the locals, not just Muslims.
